Heading home to Oakland, the Reno Fun Train, with an SD45 added for Donner Pass, is passing thru Floriston, CA (about 10 miles East of Truckee). The fence seen to the right of the locomotive is to warn advancing trains of landslides in the area. This was the first season of Amtrak operation.
In the years after World War II Southern Pacific went from being the most bullish railroad on passenger service to one of its biggest detractors. It continually downgraded service until Amtrak took over what remained.
