A Lightening Route trolley sits on display outside Montgomery Union Station on a day so humid that I couldn't see through my fogged glasses. Built by the Louisville & Nashville in 1898, the station also served the Atlantic Coast Line, Western Railway of Alabama, Seaboard Air Line, Central of Georgia, and Gulf Mobile & Ohio. The Lightening Route ran from 1886 to 1936. It is believed that this trolley, circa 1900, is the only remaining car.
Photos taken in the Deep South--primarily Alabama and Georgia--from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Featured railroads include the ICG, the West Point Route, SCL, Southern, Frisco, and even KCS.
