It happened to be my birthday, so to celebrate after work my friend Frank and I decided to try to get this very rare shot. It's rare in that you need access to Ft. Richardson Army base and you have to drive nearly 10 miles of dirt road and then hike one mile in along the river, a location known for its healthy population of bears and wolves! Hence, few railfans ever see this spot except from the open vestibule of an ARR coach sailing high above. In the background the Chugach Mountains rise with snow still covering the peaks. This is the ARR's premier passenger train about 15 minutes and 14 miles out of its destination of Anchorage after running 356 miles from Fairbanks.
