The shadows are long and there's a definite chill in the air as we find MWRC #9 "Waumbek" taking the early morning steam special up Cold Spring Hill, enroute to the summit of Mt. Washington. An amateur videographer can be seen on the platform, shooting over the shoulder of the Brakeman as he watches the track and sips his morning "cup of Joe". Note the wooden trestle over which the train is traveling. Because of the rocky and extremely uneven terrain, the entire 3-mile route of the Cog Railway is built on wooden trestle. While it minimizes the number of points of contact with the ground, it definitely increases the amount of inspection and maintenance necessary to maintain the right of way.
