Short-timer on the table The regular, morning turntable demonstration is being conducted at Steamtown National Historic Site, but most of the park visitors this day are unaware that the majestic machine before them is just three operating days away from becoming a 225-ton paper weight. Yes, three more days under steam and according to CFR 49, Part 230, CP 2317 will need to undergo a 1,472-day inspection before it can see service again. Among other things, this inspection will require removal of the boiler flues and an ultrasound survey of the entire boiler. With two other, major locomotive projects already in the queue at the Steamtown shops, it is likely to be at least a few years before 2317 can once again ply the tracks of the DL&W in Scranton.
