Rare birds indeed were Monon’s nine Alco C628s (400-408), acquired in 1964. A third of the entire roster is shown at Louisville’s Youngtown Yard in June 1965. The Hoosier Line deemed the big-footed engines too heavy for their railroad, so they were traded in 1967 back to Alco for more four-motor C420s. Alco rehabbed the C628s and resold them to the Lehigh Valley, where they were numbered 633-641. |
