Remarks & Notes |
Nose to Nose in Silverton. A D&RGW Freight arriving at Silverton Depot eases up to the pilot of a passenger train which has just offloaded its patrons. The latter is preparing to back into town to tie down for the night, clearing the main for the freight. Pictured here are two generations of D&RGW Locomotives. The Baldwin C-18 Consolidation #315 in the foreground was built in 1895 for the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad and was later acquired by the D&RG in 1917. After her retirement in 1949, she spent a half century as a movie prop and park locomotive, before being restored to operation by the Durango Railroad Historical Society. The Alco K-28 Mikado seen heading up the passenger train was built for the D&RGW in 1923. This locomotive has been in nearly continuous service since it was built and became the property of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad when it took over operation of the old D&RGW Silverton Branch in 1981 |
