The April 11, 1981 Southern Steam Special ran from Atlanta to Chattanooga, a distance of approximately 115 miles each way. The power was SOU Ms Class 2-8-2 4501, assisted by Southern FP7 6141. SOU 4501 was built in 1911 by Baldwin and was the first mikado on the roster. She has 63 inch drivers and 27x30 Cylinders. After unloading passengers for the run-by, located between Freeman and Phelps just south of Dalton, SOU 4501 gave the crowd an impressive photo run-by.
