Southbound RF&P intermodal train No. 171 rounds the curve at Rutherglen, VA on Dec. 12, 1987 with a mixed motive power consist. By this time CSX influence was really being felt on the RF&P. With the downgrading of Potomac Yard, RF&P power began operating north of that point on CSX and CR. RF&P power had to lead on the RF&P because of the Automatic Train Control. The power on No. 171 has an RF&P leader on both ends with the CSX power sandwiched in between and had gone north the day before on No. 172.
