Running several hours late, Amtrak's northbound "Auto Train" blasts through Doswell, VA on the RF&P RR on January 8, 1988. The storm that brought snow to the RF&P, brought ice to CSX in the Carolinas and No. 52 has been fighting signal problems for much of the night. Power is Amtrak P30CHs No's. 724, 721, and 702. To say that the P30CHs weren't a hit with Amtrak's engine crews is an understatement. Most often, their comments were such that they could not be used in a caption. That said, they were some awesome looking machines. Also, they could make quite a racket at full throttle. I enjoyed shooting them as much as the crews hated running them. Although three was the usual consist, on several occasions I was lucky enough to catch four.
