After more than a decade of almost absolute impossibility to find one in passenger-train service, Summer 1991/1992 marked the return of General San Martín Railroad's ALCo.-MLW FPD7's to Buenos Aires and its intercity passenger trains to and from the provinces of San Luis, Mendoza and San Juan. In a hot and clear January afternoon, model FPD7 #8410 was ready to depart Retiro Station with train number 1571, the Fridays-only "Sierras Grandes" to Villa Dolores, which carried coaches of the everyday local to Junín consolidated with its consist. The sudden appearance of FPD7's in Buenos Aires brought legions of railfans to Retiro each time one was reported in the City; and as had become the norm of the time, a packed group waited, behind the scene and out of view, for the train to leave. And for friend and FPD7-fan Gabriel Castelo, too young to witness by himself this Retiro scene of almost twenty years ago, there goes my present and wishes of happiness in his Birthday!
