An old shot from 1980. In November that year, Stanier Pacific no. 46229 Duchess of Hamilton headed a special train from Liverpool to York to commemorate 150 years of mail by train. The second coach is a travelling Post Office. here we see the magnificent locomotive storming up Miles Platting Bank with the train. Sadly very little mail is sent by train tese days. The locomotive has since been covered in a streamlined casing, to attempt to emulate its condition when it was first built. In my opinion, this is a big mistake, as the streamlining was never very attractive and it covers up these beautiful lines. However, it was done at the whim of a magazine, which raised the money and it is now on display in the National Railway Museum in York in a streamlined, but non-steamable state.
