Remarks & Notes |
The EuroSprinter locomotive ES 64 U2 (Siemens) has just left the Kirchberg tunnel near the village of Istein with an Intercity train coming from Basel. This type of trains will in the near future speed through the new Katzenberg tunnel. This tunnel is part of the planned third and fourth railway track between Karlsruhe and Basel. The project owner, the Deutsche Bahn, expects the two additional tracks to drastically reduce the travel time, because today the trains have to slow down to less than 70 km/h due to the twisty track. In the future, the trains will be able to travel with a speed of up to 250 km/h. The new railway line and the tunnel are planned to go in operation in 2016. The Katzenberg tunnel has a total length of 9385 meters. |
