Controlled Cooling With a defect clearly seen at the head of the rail due to the noticeable rust there, this weld had no chance in keeping the rail together as the low temperatures of winter created enough tension through the reduction of rail length to pull this field weld apart. As the copper wire between the rail indicates, CSX Track Maintenance is on the scene to safely guide trains over this break and soon will heat it up for repair and thus bring the track back up to running speed again.
All those shots of interesting railroad details, what you see trackside, up close and personal! Excludes shots going into my other albums: "Engine Details," "Signal Details," and "Switchstand Shots."
