Remarks & Notes |
In early 1953, the Interstate Railroad was testing diesels to find the best replacements for its steam locomotives. Borrowed C&O RSD-5 has just returned from Miller Yard with a Hill Crew--bringing a mix of general freight and empty hoppers for the L&N at Dorchester Junction, two miles ahead. The single unit flies two rather large white "extra" flags. Normal power for a Hill Crew would be one of the Interstate's two 2-8-8-2s. The Alco impressed the short line---much more than the EMD SD-7 demonstrator also tried out. The road finally opted for Alco RS-3s. |
