When you are a major railroad you can utilize equipment like drop tables and overhead cranes to replace locomotive trucks. When you are a shortline or a regional railroad, most often, you are not that lucky. You have to improvise. We were at the A&M yard in Springdale, AR on Oct. 12, 1999. A local crane company was hired to lift the long hood end of C420 No. 58 to replace a truck. The crane operator carefully watched the hand signals from a co-worker, who carefully watched two A&M mechanics, as the C420 was slowly placed back on its newly rebuilt AAR Type B truck.
