Alicia, PA 7/11/12 - Built by U.S. Steel, the Cumberland Mine Railroad is one of the most unique operations in the United States. With 18 miles of isolated track between mine and port, the Cumberland Mine Railroad runs an average of 38 hoppers each trip on a half-dozen daily turns along a single track with no sidings and no connection to the outside rail system. A pair of SD-38-2s are the only locomotives on the railroad--number 1 and 22--and they operate on each end of every train in push-pull operation. Both locomotives are facing east, brought to the railroad by barge and truck. On a hot, hazy summer afternoon, CMYX 1 is seen here under the sand tower at Alicia Port after having unloaded its 38 hoppers at the air dump facility in the background. The coal is transloaded here to barges on the Monogahela River, which will then traverse to the deep South via the Mississippi River to service southern coal-fired power plants, as well as to overseas destinations. Access to the railroad property was by permission. The railroad and mine are now owned and operated by Alpha Natural Resources.
