Late day shadows are ascending up the steep canyon walls of spectacular Ruby Canyon east of Utaline, Colorado, on August 4, 1996. A late-running Amtrak No. 5, the California Zephyr, cruises along the Colorado River in the darkening canyon, with the flat nose of an Amtrak GE P40DC “Genesis” locomotive catching a few last rays of sun as it curves around a corner. Once out of the canyon, the passengers will be treated to a glowing sunset as the train races across the intermountain desert of Utah.
