Remarks & Notes |
Leaving the major city of Sheffield eastward along the Don Valley, at Blackburn Valley Junction the route of the 'Tin Bath' special then heads north towards Chapeltown and Barnsley. The train is seen here forging up the steeply graded valley alongside Blackburn Brook (a tributary of the Don). Until recently the route was surprisingly rural, but the inexorably spreading rash of 'tin sheds' now means that most decent views of the line are gone and are now limited to but one or two places. Once past Barnsley, the train will gradually turn westward onto the single line that climbs steeply eventually reaching the small town of Penistone set high on the edge of the Pennine Hills. |
