Remarks & Notes |
Late afternoon finds the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada's glowing in the finally rays of a September day. The quiet calm enjoyed by hikers and mountain bikers today was once the scene of great action. Where the ground shook under the monster 4-8-8-2 cab-forwards or air filled with the pulse of first generation EMD cabs units as they lifted westbound tonnage up the Donner grade. Today the west portal of Tunnel 7 on the abandoned number 1 track serves as only a reminder of the Espee. With Donner Lake down in the Valley below the summit of Donner Pass on track 1 was less than a quarter mile ahead inside Tunnel 6. SP removed the 'original' Donner main between Shed 47 and Norden back in the early 1990s. Today it remains as one of two sections of single track on the otherwise double tracked Roseville Subdivision, now operated by successor Union Pacific. |
