Starting this summer, you can now ride the rails from Boston to Rockland, Maine. A decade ago, an Amtrak Downeaster demonstration train traveled on Guilford’s Brunswick Branch, at the time still restricted to slow speeds, and met one of the first ever Maine Eastern passenger trains nose to nose in Brunswick to show the public what the future of Maine passenger rail could look like one day. After ten years of Maine Eastern passenger service without a connection to Amtrak, a direct transfer between the two trains in Brunswick can finally be made on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Amtrak’s Downeaster departing Boston at 9:05am will arrive in Brunswick with a Maine Eastern train to Rockland departing shortly after, and returning to Brunswick early enough to catch the evening's Downeaster home.
