Tennessee Pass. Mitchell, Colorado. June 1996. If memory serves correctly this eastbound coal load was one of the first Test DPU coal trains run over the Pass. This 2x2 configuration eliminated a manned crew out of Glenwood Springs. The train still had a standard 4 unit manned push out of Minturn. The train was also one motor short and was barely making a crawl as it dug into the toughest part of the ascent...... At this time Southern Pacific was running taconite trains westbound to Geneva Steel, on the return trip the trains were loaded with Colorado and Utah Coal for midwestern industry (Colorado Coal is prized by the Cement industry) and utilities.
