Remarks & Notes |
The Wooden Caboose in Crescent City - [Plate 400] - Forlorn and all alone, this caboose from the long defunct Crescent City & Smith River RR sits by the Rabbit building at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds in Crescent City California.
The Crescent City & Smith River RR was a short-line logging railroad constructed in the late 1870's to early 1880's by the Hobbs, Wall & Company to serve a sawmill in Crescent City.
The line ran north of town and connected Crescent City with the town of Smith River.
By 1889 the railroad had bridged the Smith River and was running passenger operations in addition to the logging trains.
Service continued until the timber in the area ran out, and by the late 1910's the line was abandoned and the company out business. |
