A normal train running up the 4% grade out of Chama is 7 cars. There are 4 coaches, a rider gondola, and 2 parlor cars. Occasionally, ticket sales increase to the point where some extra cars need to be put on, but usually only 1 or 2.
On September 27, 2014, the fall colors on Cumbres Pass were at their peak, and ridership skyrocketed! On this train, there were 3 coaches, a rider gon, 8 more coaches, a rider gon, and the 2 parlor cars, totaling 15 cars!
A single K36 can haul 8 of the C&TS passenger cars up the 4%, so if this train was 2 more cars, another locomotive would have been needed! A doubleheader up the 4% is an experience EVERYONE needs, and won't soon be forgotten!
