An ex-EL SDP45 and a GP38 of Penn Central lineage get a westbound arrive in Cresson, having successfully gotten their train to the top of the tortuous grade west from Altoona. 6687 is an SDP45 in outward appearance only, as it never had the steam generator that was implied in the "P" (passenger) designation of the model. The Erie-Lackawanna repeatedly had issues with its fuel-guzzling SD45's running out of fuel on the road. The longer-framed SDP45 carbody came with a larger fuel tank that addressed the fuel capacity issue, so EL ordered its next high-horsepower EMD units with the SDP45 carbody, but no steam generator.
