Fairbanks-Morse 556, a 1956-built H12-44, sets out for an afternoon switching Santa Fe’s vast Argentine Yards in Kansas City, Kansas on April 26,1965. The ancient yard office in the background could easily date back to 1906, when this yard was constructed, the largest on the Santa Fe system. Behind the yard office is the Kansas River levee, rebuilt and strengthened considerably since 1951 when the river poured over its banks leaving the entire area -- shops, yards and roundhouse -- under water and halting railroad traffic for days.
