Various locomotives await work at Union Pacific’s Omaha Shops in June 1981. UP No. 1221 is a recently rebuilt EMD SW9 that is now labeled an SW10 and was completed only days earlier on May 30, 1981. In the background is steam locomotive 4-8-8-4 “Big Boy” No. 4023 that is now located in Kenefick Park in Omaha. This entire 100-acre shop complex, a major overhaul and maintenance facility for the railroad, was closed in 1988 and demolished soon after. You wouldn’t recognize this site today, as it is the location of CenturyLink Center Omaha arena and convention center.
