A Soo Line train using trackage rights on the Milwaukee Road derailed during its nightly trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in April 1984. I don’t recall the details, but I seem to remember that the cause was some kids reversing a switch to an industrial spur (just below the nose of No. 4420 in photo) that the train hit at track speed. I don’t believe anyone was seriously hurt. In this view, a specialized cleanup crew was on site to begin the process of draining the fuel tanks of remaining diesel fuel, among other things, before contract crews begin rerailing cars and locomotives.
