Just to feature the Class 1E that was hidden behind the Class ES shunter in Photo ID 529667. Covered in dust and in very poor condition now, these two examples of South African Railway electric motive power history are still standing in a disused Goods Shed at Danskraal / Ladysmith. Class 1E, E25, built in 1923 by Swiss Locomotive & Machine Works. The Class 1E locomotives were the first electric locomotives placed in Service by SAR. Behind E25 is Class ES Shunter, E518, a centre cab electric shunting locomotive built in 1952 and known to their crews as “Studebakers”. During 2014 they formed part of a Go Dove auction lot (for scrap), which included a Class 35 diesel locomotive and a burnt out Class 6E1. It appears that the Class 35 and the Class 6E1 have already been cut up, but these two remain for now.
The red & whisker livery of the South African Railways / Suid Afrikaanse Spoorwee collection. Getting harder to find examples of this fantastic and much loved livery still in service!
