Norfolk Southern intermodal train 22K crosses Portageville Bridge, spanning the Genesee River within New York's Letchworth State Park. On May 6, 1875, a fire destroyed the previous wooden structure here, so the Erie Railroad Company built this steel span replacement within an amazing 53 days. Opened for traffic on July 31, 1875, the bridge has been owned by the Erie, Erie-Lackawanna, Conrail, and Norfolk Southern. A groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday marked the official beginning of construction of a new arch-style bridge to replace the 140 year-old structure. Photo by Casey Thomason.
