The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) operations between Penn Station in New York City to Bay Head in southern New Jersey became a real anachronism in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In the South Amboy engine terminal on a Summer day in 1982, no less than 7 E8s can be seen in this picture of NYC, PRR, and Southern ancestry. In the foreground, E8 #4324, originally NYC 4079, is coupled to another former NYC E8, #4326. NJ Transit became the entity responsible for NJ commuter operations in 1979, but most of the E8s remained in the NJDOT livery, with #4326 being an exception. The lead unit in the second set of E8s, #4253, was built as PRR 5793A. This locomotive is preserved by the URHS in Boonton, NJ. NJ Transit acquired a number of Southern E8s that became available when the Southern turned over operations of the Crescent to Amtrak in 1979. These locomotives operated in their Southern paint on NJ Transit as shown by the E8 in the far left of the picture.
