A southbound train of empties passes the Monongahela station at Jefferson, PA. Across the Ten Mile Creek (left and behind the photographer) is the town of Mather, where the Mather Mine, site of the seventh-worst mining disaster in US history, was located. On May 19, 1928, 195 men perished in a gas and coal dust explosion. The mine finally closed in 1965.
