With the emerald colors of spring sprouting in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, three Rio Grande Tunnel Motors head eastbound through Castilla with a “dirt train” picked up at Sutro on the west side of the Soldier summit grade. With only five unpatched Rio Grande SD40T-2s left on the Union Pacific system that day, the majority (5390, 5371 and 5349) are making this unusual detour over the hill. May 5, 2004, ended up being the very last time that three Rio Grande locomotives crossed Soldier Summit together.
