The early morning sun greets Amtrak's westbound Southwest Chief as it sails across the floor of the Antelope Valley just shy of entering Lancaster, CA. This is the second of three detours of the Southwest Chief due to the massive 'Blue Cut Wildfire' which temporarily suspended rail operations on the train's normal route through the Cajon Pass. Using BNSF's Mojave Subdivision (Barstow->Mojave), Union Pacific's Mojave Subdivision (Mojave->Palmdale), and Metrolink's Valley Subdivision (Palmdale->Los Angeles) the Chief was able to skirt around the fire stricken Cajon Pass and bring its cross-country travelers into Los Angeles, CA.
