Not much steam from the Pennsylvania Railroad survived the PRR dieselization, and only four locomotives that I know of have been steamed up since the 1950’s. On the Strasburg Railroad, 4-4-0 1223 had been a roster stalwart since 1965.In 1982, with CN 2-6-0 89 needing an overhaul, the Strasburg leased PRR 4-4-2 7002 from the railroad Museum of Pennsylvania as a stand-in. On certain weekends, the two PRR alumni would be doubleheaded, and the two even pulled a few mainline excursions. In 1989, ultrasonic testing revealed thin firebox walls on both locomotives, and they were retired and moved to the museum. Here the two work a train upgrade east of the Black Horse Road crossing.
