After I arrived at the overlook where you can see the loading area of the Deseret Power Railway I realized I only had a short time to find a suitable spot for a shot. The sun angle at my first choice was poor, nearly straight on to the locos. So I tried a backup spot that had been on my to do list for several years. This was on a rough two track trail about a mile from a good dirt road. The sun angle looked good here, and then as I was scouting around in the junipers for the perfect spot I spied a headlight about a mile or so east. Better hurry, Dick, you’ve got about 2 minutes to find a good spot before it’s show time. Well, I did the best I could and this is the result. The train here is pulling hard up hill on the east approach to Holum Pass. From my cab ride a few years ago I remember the speed here was about 20 mph. That ridge in the far background is known as the Cathedral Bluffs and is the western edge of the Piceance Basin, home to a great many gas wells and rich oil shale deposits.
