Stalking the path of the former Virginian Railroad, Norfolk & Western 611 lines the Roanoke River with a trail of steam bearing a resemblance to a stream of cotton as the J Class works south through the mountains of Virginia passing the old Niagara Dam site. The Roanoke River has carved a path in the otherwise overwhelming landscape for the railroad to make its passage, in which the Virginian took full advantage of when constructing the line from Roanoke to Hurt, VA. The Niagara Dam was initially constructed in 1906, and with a few modifications is still used today. The structure in the foreground here is the still operating original power house for the dam.
