On Home Rails
TKEN 9433 showing it's age is tied down for the weekend at the TennKen home Yard in Dyersburg, TN on this cool November morning. TennKen own a trio of these GP28's which came from the Illinois Central Railroad. These 16-cylinder, 1,800hp diesel locomotive were built between 1964-1965 with only 16 built for the American locomotive market, and Illinois Central being the biggest buyer of these odd ball motive power. The TennKen begin service in 1983 operating 51 trackage miles from Dyersburg, TN to Hickman, KY. What was part of the Illinois Central Gulf ex: GM&O Cairo main line was doomed for abandonment during the financial hardship of the Illinois Central Gulf days, which later on the ICG Management seem fit to cease operation on the Hickman line in 1981. By 1983 local governments in Kentucky seen interest into purchasing the right of way from the ICG and rehabilitated the line for economical interest thus was the beginning of the TennKen Railroad.
