Abandoned remnants of the Rahway Valley Railroad Maplewood Branch. The branch line reached a length of nearly 4 miles and served numerous types of customers such as coal, lumber, building products, plaster, paper products, grain & feed, cement, tools, charcoal, and even a golf club manufacturer. Business declined in the latter half of the century and line was severed with building of the I-78 Interstate highway in the 1960's. In the early 70's only one customer was left, a building supply company who only shipped periodically with RV. The branch was finally closed in 1973 when the ICC approved its abandonment. Today all that's left is a couple sidings and the section of track you see here.
