About 6:00 AM, CR 6493 South, led by four locomotives, experienced a derail at Mather, Pa. The four engines pulled the 31 empties still on the rails to a siding at Waynesburg. Since several trains had been loaded at Bailey Mine on the Manor Branch by this time, the two lead Conrail locomotives headed light to Bailey to serve as additional helpers. The remaining two locomotives, with WC 9093 in the lead, waited at Waynesburg until the derailed cars were cleared. In this scene, WC 9093 south at Waynesburg (PETE) prepares to back the 31 empties towards Mather to couple onto the remaining empties behind the derailment and pull them all to Bailey Mine.
