Passing Peerless Mills. It's Sunday morning, and the traffic is light on the normally busy McFarland Avenue in Rossville, GA, as TVRM's Summerville Doubleheader passes through the wide, unguarded crossing with whistle blaring loudly. The train is passing an abandoned, industrial complex known as Peerless Woolen Mills. Built in the early 20th century, this million square foot complex was an active textile manufacturing site until the mid-1960s, employing as many as 3,000 people. The dormant factory complex is now quite run-down and has recently been auctioned for less than the cost of a small house. Although renovations and hazard remediation would certainly cost a fortune, here's hoping that the new owners can somehow find a way to preserve this important piece of the city's manufacturing history....and a great prop for a railroad photo!
