Semaphores, code-lines, and the Chief...Not to much has changed at Chapelle, New Mexico over the decades. Sure the fabled 'Route of the Chiefs' is now owned by BNSF and the last Chief standing is Amtrak's Southwest Chief but the line itself is much the same today as it was when the 'Super' plied these rails. Someday time will catch up with the seemingly uncatchable Raton and Glorieta Subdivision but until then we can still enjoy an era of railroading almost lost to the history books.
Photos showing the railroad pole lines. The pole line used four basic electrical circuits - telegraph, telephone, signaling, and power. Modern technologies of fiber optics, microwave, radio, satellite, and computers have been replacing the pole lines.
