This demonstration freight was part of a day-long photo event offered by the EBT on the Friday of the 2011 Fall Spectacular. It was among the last photo freights that EBT ever ran. Until 1956, the railroad was primarily a coal-hauler, operating on roughly 33 miles of track. The line shut down as a common carrier in '56, but resumed operations in a limited capacity as a tourist hauler in 1960. Only 5 of the original 33 miles of ROW was maintained from then on, but the original railroad was never dismantled. Nearly all of the 3-foot gauge train is still in place today, although in many places, forests have grown up around it....and in some cases, you'll find stout trees growing up between the rails. Many original structures still exist along its routes, and even though EBT no longer operates, rail enthusiasts still make the journey to South Central PA, just to engage in a little railroad archaeology. In most sections of the country, an abandoned railroad like this would have been ripped up in a heartbeat, but like a few other gems, such as Nevada Northern, its remoteness has so far been its salvation.
