Remarks & Notes |
Heading into an afternoon thunderstorm. A casual wave from the driver of Class 6E1, E1524, in her original South African Railways livery (even if somewhat refreshed) and still sporting a full set of her highly prized brass number plates. By October 2010 the Class 6E1 locomotives had already been reduced to doing mundane tasks on the Natal Main Line as freight haulers with Transnet Freight Rail – in this case taking empty grain wagons through to Masons Mill in Pietermaritzburg and then returning as light units to their depot at Umbilo in Durban. Originally built in 1974, E1524 was upgraded and converted in 2011 to a Class 18E Series 2 locomotive and renumbered 18-674 and is still part of the Transnet Freight Rail fleet. |
