Heavy 0-8-0 T four cylinder compound cogwheel steamlocomotive, most powerful on 1 meter gauge in Europe, on the turntable at Realp. This 800 HP HG 4/4 # 704 was built in 1923 by SLM Winterthur and delivered in 1924 to the Chemins de fer de l'Indochine to Indochina, today Vietnam, for the cogwheel railway from Song Pha (former Krong Pha) to Da Lat. 7 locomotives of this series were built by the SLM between 1923 and 1930, further two by Esslingen/Germany. The # 704 was brought back to Switzerland in 1990 more or less as scrap. After 12 years with nearly 50000 man hours, this engineering marvel is like new, making the first trials on the Furka pass line with grades up to 11.0 %. From next year, she should pull trains of up to 70 ton over the pass.
