The Pacolet River Stops Here. This Southern Pullman car named Pacolet River sits at what most likely is its final resting place after a long career. Originally built around 1949 and named for a South Carolina river, this car saw service with the Southern and then with Amtrak. It was numbered 2008 for the Southern, but now bears its Amtrak number of 2853. After its retirement from Amtrak, the car then was bought by the State of Georgia for use in an excursion train project around Atlanta that ultimately fell through. A private owner then purchased the car at auction in 1995 for use at the Tennessee Central Railway Museum as TCRX #2854 for a number of years before donating it in 2018 to the City of Landrum, SC, which unfortunately had to have it delivered to the town by truck because the line at the front of the photo is the out-of-service W-Line leading to and from the Saluda Grade in Saluda, NC and is severed around one mile south from this point.
Selected photos of locomotives, passenger cars, and rolling stock in the Southern's livery as well as other assets once belonging to or used by the Southern.
