EMD touted the GP50 as a do-anything locomotive, but in actual service it seemed more runner than dragger. The model did not live up to the manufacturer's hype and proved unpopular on many roads, but Southern (and later NS) squeezed a lot of use out of their fleet. In the photo, three GP50s head an eastbound unit tank train on the former Central of Georgia main between Birmingham, AL and Columbus, GA.
Photos taken in the Deep South--primarily Alabama and Georgia--from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Featured railroads include the ICG, the West Point Route, SCL, Southern, Frisco, and even KCS.
Selected photos of locomotives, passenger cars, and rolling stock in the Southern's livery as well as other assets once belonging to or used by the Southern.
