Freight Extra 29 heads north. With a very gusty wind whipping the Arizona high desert, Grand Canyon Railway Locomotive #29 heads north out of the Williams Yard on the old AT&SF Grand Canyon line, with a freight consist. Seeing any Grand Canyon steamer with freight cars is a rarity these days. Since the line dieselized, steam operations have been reduced to about 10 days a year and all such operations are typically run on the line's daily passenger trip to the "Big Ditch". I'm thinking that the last time there was a photo freight on this railroad was when Pete Lerro organized a trip with the 4960, way back in 2011. Although our Fall 2019 Trains Magazine trip generally featured the green, Harriman-Style Commuter Coaches, the railroad did treat us to a freight consist for a few run-bys on Sunday morning with our featured locomotive, the former LS&I #29.
