Butte Anaconda & Pacific 47 is a heavy duty boxcab freight locomotive built in 1914. The small trailing car is a traction booster to help with the stiff grades in the Butte Mining District. In the early part of the Twentieth Century, Butte was called the "Richest Hill on Earth!" Immigrants from around the world came to work the hollowed mountain chasing veins of what was sometimes pure copper. While the exact statistics will never be known somewhere in excess of 48 Billion Dollars in copper was taken from this mountain. The copper ore mined here in large part made the American industrial transformation possible. With the mining the railroads soon followed. The Northern Pacific, Union Pacific, Great Northern and the Union Pacific all reached and made huge profits from Butte.
