The line of the former Bernina Railway, now part of the Rhaetian Railway, was opened in 1910 and goes without summit tunnel over the 2253 meter high Bernina pass. The 1 meter gauge adhesion line with up to 7.0 % grade and tight curves was electrified with 750 V DC from the start (nowadays 1000 V). We have a view from the Lagalb mountain (2890 meter a.s.l) towards the south, with the frozen and snow covered Lago Bianco on the right. Train R 1636 from Tirano can be seen running along the lake, it just left the 140 meter long Scala snow protection gallery and is heading towards Ospizio Bernina. In the very far distance, near Le Prese on the shore of the Lago di Poschiavo, about 1900 meter lower then the photographer point, you can see train 4640 running north, about 1 hour behind the train which you can see near the Lago Bianco. The linear distance from here to Le Prese is about 15 kilometers, but the length of the railway line is more then 25 kilometers, because of several loops.
